I got accepted into the barter program for the Actor's Gym, which means I work for them instead of paying for classes. Today was my first day of the bartership, which meant I got to spend two hours transferring all the students' medical and emergency information onto a spreadsheet. There are about seven hundred students, so working on this project will fulfill my bartership. Kevin, my boss, also offered me a job house managing for three of the Gym's upcoming shows. This is really exciting because a) it means another opportunity to get involved with the company, which never hurts, and b) I'll get to see some sweet circus shows for free. Since the spreadsheet project is going to fulfill my bartership, house managing is going to be a paid position as well which is awesome.
In circus today we did more conditioning, learned how to walk on the globe, and did more Spanish web. I'm still pretty inept at the gymnastics part of our conditioning, but I'm slowly improving. I've never taken a gymnastics class before, so it's a very new physical language for me. We did more Spanish web in the aerial section, which was fun and definitely a lot easier that in yesterday's class when we had just learned it. Sylvia, the teacher and artistic director for the Gym, seemed pretty impressed with how well I did. She was surprised that this was my first time taking a circus class, which I will take as a compliment since she's so hard to read. Walking on the globe was pretty scary at first because you are in a constant state of instability, but eventually I was able to stand and move around a little without a spotter. This was pretty exciting because a lot of the students who had already taken the class were still using a spotter.
Unicycling and silk knot next week!
