Pinkalicious

Well Pinkalicious opened this Thursday. It was a blast working on it, but also extremely stressful so I'm relieved and sad it's over. I finally finished budgeting as well, so everything is done now except the show itself! It's been a really interesting experience doing the show at the beginning of my internship instead of at the end. I was thinking about how things would have been different if I had been working on Fame Junior, which is what the other intern will be working on in the next few weeks. Even though Fame Junior would have been nice because I might have had more time to work on the show, I REALLY enjoyed getting to see my designs come to life through the shop. I had a chance to sit down with my director today, and she reiterated a few things that I felt that I definitely learned about through this experience. The first was the the difference between adult theatre (the only kind of theatre I have ever done) and children's theatre (the theatre type of Pinkalicious). The two are completely different in every way. I didn't realize at first how covered up the actors and actresses would need to be, not that I was even bringing in provocative outfits, but even something slightly too high above the knee was too risky. The colors and character interpretations were also completely different from what I have traditionally been taught and studied. Colors have to bold and bright and repetition is needed in color, pattern, and style for the children to learn and understand the theatre pieces. Another important lesson my boss was talking to me about was keeping in contact with every member of the production team throughout the planning of the show. She said that she thought I had good communication/people skills so that was great to hear! Lastly, she mentioned that theatre is life, so I should be observant not only to clothes and styles of the people around me but also the way they act, change, react to everything else in order to understand theatre better. This has pushed me to make a conscious effort to be more observant of everyone else around me. Also a group of 5 girls wore cupcake dresses to Pinkalicious today. It's so crazy to see all those little girls dressed up in pink so excited to see the show. :) Definitely makes all the hard work worth it!
