Dive Rolling, Juggling, and More Trapeze

Today was my first day of circus arts class. It was very intimidating because all but two other students have taken the class before and are not only much better than I am, but also are a lot closer socially. Nevertheless, I used my natural sense of charisma and charm to get to know a lot of the students, and they all were very nice and didn't make fun of my pathetic somersaults. One of the students, Kevin, is also the guy I'll be working with this summer in the barter portion of my internship.

Our teacher is very much a hard-ass, and doesn't give a lot of instruction, which meant I had to figure out a lot of things on my own. It isn't until you've totally failed at something that she'll help you in a curt, no-nonsense manner. I had the lovely fortune to experience this when we were doing dive rolls, which is basically where you dive into a somersault. She kept making me go back and do them again until I got them right.

Each class period is divided into three sections. The first is a warm-up with a lot of acrobatics and strength-conditioning. Second, we work on a ground skill, for example, today we learned how to juggle and later we'll learn things like stilt-walking and unicycling. Finally, we learn an aerial skill, which parallels the aerial arts curriculum, so today we did more trapeze. This is nice because I get extra practice, and I feel a little more confident since its something I've already done.
