Friday ended our Harry Potter Week at the Des Moines Playhouse. It was very successful, even with 65 4th-8th graders. The kids had a great time, by Wednesday all shyness was gone and they were fully invested in the Harry Potter World. Friday was spent rehearsing selected scenes that the kids independently created throughout the week, which we filmed, and at the end of the day, all the kids got to watch each other's work.
This week I'm interning for Nighttime TV with 5-6th graders. We will be spending the week helping the kids write, direct, and rehearse a half hour news show that their parents will attend on Friday. It'll be interesting to see what the kids come up with. The teachers and interns try not to interfere too much when we give the kids time to independently work and collaborate, unless we absolutely need to, because we want them to develop those collaborative and social skills through theatrical tasks. T'will be fun.
