This week I have to work every day at my other job, which means that I won't be able to get many hours in at the Curtainbox. I did, fortunately, manage to make it to the autism class today, where we introduced improv to the students. We did this by pairing up the students and giving them a first line from which to start a conversation in front of the class. While these ended up being slightly disjointed at times, it was wonderful to see the students interacting with each other.
The biggest goal of our class actually isn't to teach the students how to act. Instead, it is a way to allow the students to partake in personal interactions and work on social skills. Using a theatrical lens helps the students because the imaginative aspect of the class decreases the stress that autistic children feel in social situations.
