Welcome to the ISU Theatre Blogspot

What better way to start a blog than "What I did on my Summer Vacation"

Here are some updates from some of the people of ISU Theatre: Please add your story by commenting to this post

Michael Rubke
I'm going to Bulgaria next week (with Sarah and Levi, Nick J, John Flotho, Mariana Seda). Leaving July 10. We're spending a month at the Rhodophi International Theatre Collective, studying world theatre styles and workshopping ideas for new plays. For prep work, they've asked us to read up on Norse mythology, and read the plays A Doll's House, The Glass Menagerie, and For Whom Southern Belle Tolls.

Meghan Sigwarth
My summer has been really busy so far. I am being a nanny for three wonderful children. A five year old and twin four year olds. I'm doing an acting internship with the Grand Opera House in Dubuque, Iowa. They're putting on Beauty and the Beast and I play Babette the feather duster and am the enchantress at the beginning of the show. It's a lot of fun! Other than that, I start rehearsals for The Shape of Things, a play by Neil LaBute in a week. My friend Brandon Pape, a recent graduate of Loyola is directing. I'm really looking forward to it-especially playing the part of Evelyn. I don't have a social life outside of the theatre (haha), but I do enjoying hanging out with all the theatre folk, writing some music, and reading, (oh and preparing for Fifth of July).

Taryn Packheiser
TP's Summer News:July 4th: Packheiser Family reunion in Texas. We have had yearly reunions sinceI was a little kid. My grandmother had 13 children (my dad being one of them)so you can imagine that we are large group in the U.S. As far as I know we are the original and only Packheisers in this country. So if you meet one I'mprobably related.

July 7th: Screening work at Chez Bushwick in Brooklyn in a group show producedby friends at University of Illinois: Champaign-UrbanaJuly 11th: Screening work at Terpsichore in Southern Pines, North Carolina in agroup show produced by a friend from North Carolina School of the Arts
July 14-August 2nd: Working for Kids Co'Motion with Valerie Williams in Ames. http://www.comotion.org/docs/kcm.htm Performances at 7:30pm at City Auditoriumon August 1st and 2nd

Artist Update: Currently working a new evening length solo with interactivevideo and audio. Content is exploring horror stories and comedy with a balanceof hope/awareness in between. Also exploring non-literal character work basedon emotional changes and costumed identity

Gypsy: Reading the script, teaching myself how to baton twirl, listening to themusic, learning about Musical Theater history online.

Personal: I listen to at least 10 new cds a week and usually watch 3-7 movies aweek. I get terribly frightened by Iowa rainstorms.

Kaytee Stearns
I am doing an internship with The Core Talent Management in Los Angeles thissummer. It is so much fun. We have clients such as Dr. Drew, Drew Lachey, andTom Green. It is a great experience.

Jeff Mason
I have an internship in Des Moines this summer at the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. Right now I am working on a project that brings people together across the state that are interested in Culture, History, and the Arts. I am also planning workshops for kids visiting the State Historical Building that include basic acting and movement. I don't have any travel plans this summer, just the drive between Ames and Des Moines everyday!

Carrie Taylor
This summer I am in Winona, MN as a stage management intern at the Great River Shakespeare Festival along with ISU Alum Adam Moeller (Company Manager here). We're doing The Merchant of Venice and The Taming of the Shrew.

Brad Dell
I'm directing THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW for Western Illinois University's SUMMER MUSIC THEATRE.

Jim Trenberth

Had breakfast with KCACTF Artistic Director (and former ISU Theatre Faculty)Gregg Henry

I'm off for Colorado right after the 4th.

Ahh!! I think this is a great idea! This summer has flown by. First I went to Colorado with Brittany Borstad, oh, it was so insanely gorgeous there. Then Scott does these prank things for offices, where they pretend to higher him and he plays tricks and is annoying (like Andy from the Office) to a the one of the unexpecting employees. Well because of that we got to go to Vegas for a weekend where he continued a prank for this company. Veags is ok, but we got to take a helicopter through the Grand Canyon and then ate lunch in the middle of the Grand Canyon...it was amazing!
Now, we are getting ready to leave for South Dakota for the fourth. And then we leave for Baton Rouge...this grown up thing is scary! :)

The Summer I have spent it in NYC doing an internship for my Acting Coach (Maggie Maes) who is also a Manager in the city. It is a great experience. I also was a chaperone "counselor" at a theatre workshop in upstate new york for a week. At the workshop I took classes with people who are currently on broadway or working in the area Ben Cameron from the original cast of WICKED and Laura Osnes Sandy from Grease just to name a few. I am also taking dance classes in the city when not working. Working for Maggie is an experience to say the least, sometimes it's hard but I feel like I am really learning alot and that it will be worth it in the end! I am enjoying the majority of it.

Hello everyone! I've been living in Chicago for a little over a month now and things are finally starting to fall into place. I just news today that I've been offered a position at the American Theatre Company (ATC) as the assistant to the artistic director. I am unbelievable excited to be working for such a great theatre. I also am stage managing Last of the Red Hot Lovers at a theatre in the suburbs, and I suddenly find myself extremely busy. However, busy is sooooo much better then bored and lonely. I have a tiny apartment which I love and my cat. Now if only jobs in the theatre would start paying more. :)

ISU Dining, ftw! I'm taking Music 102 online and sitting on my butt. Likely major changes forthcoming, but don't worry, I'm not dropping theatre! Prepping for 5th of July, learning era songs for the guitar, reading Jack Kerouac, etc. And I saw Wall-E.

Eh by the way this is Mat Wymore.

Wow. This is an amazing summer. In May I studied with Augusto Boal learning more about his theories of the Theatre of the Oppressed. It was thrilling to work with such an icon in world theatre. What I learned is being applied by the Catalyst Theatre Company in our performances dealing with gender violence this fall.

This coming week, myself, my son Levi and students Michael Rubke, Mariana Seda, Nick Juelsgaard and John Flotho will be leaving for Bulgaria. We'll be studying and creating original performance pieces at the 2008 Rhodopi International Theater Collective. Artists from all around the world will be attending. In addition, we'll be visiting a number of historical sites in Bulgaria. Among these are Peperikon, the ruins of an ancient Thracian city and theatre carved out of stone. It was here where the cult of Dionysus performed thousands of years ago. Other destinations include Devil's Throat, the mythological entryway to Hades (this means we'll be able to say that we went to hell and back!) and the mythological birthplace of Orpheus. The month will culminate in all of us performing at the national theatre of Bulgaria, The Rhodopi Theatre. Needless to say, we're all very excited.

Wow! This summer is going by so quickly, it sounds like everyone is having a great break. I have had a pretty busy summer. I interned with a theatre company in Minneapolis. I was the assistant stage manager, and it was a great expereince. The second night of the performance the lead actress had to drop out of the show, so I actually had to jump into the show after it already opened and take on a minor role (in a cast of five). After the show closed, my director asked me to stay and assist with a boot camp for actors that she was leading the following week. She has also asked me to help with two other productions, but I am not sure yet if the timing will work out or not. Other than that, I took an online class and have been keeping busy with a new puppy. Happy Fourth!

My summer....Well, I moved to Minneapolis. In the meantime, I was offered the "near resident" scenic designer position at StageWest which I took. So I'll be designing a ton of shows this year! Three hours away from where I am residing. I will also be starting work at WholeFoods so at least I get a discount on fun food! And am looking for a theatre or two to volunteer for up here. I think I'll be busy. Oh, and let's not forget grad school shopping :)

Well, it's been a fun summer. I moved to Los Angeles at the beginning on June, so I've been here a month. I am doing a Feature Film Advertising internship at Imaginary Forces, which is a production/advertising company. So they do trailers, teasers, and commercials- stuff like that. It's a lot of fun and I'm learning a lot. Other than that I'm looking for jobs so I can make some money. It's been fun and I love it out here!

I'm enjoying taking the summer off, for the most part. Went to Michigan for my sister's graduation, then she and I drove cross country to San Francisco for her new job. Got back for a few days, now I'm off to Wisconsin to see friends. I've got a road trip planned through South Dakota, finally gonna see Mt. Rushmore. We'll head back through the UP before spending a week at my family cabin in Northern Michigan. I'm also hoping to get in a visit to New York to see some friends. So summer is just flying by.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to say hi from Ukraine where I'm working in the Peace Corps and I love to read what is going on in Ames... I will be helping design a theatre performance about the prevention of HIV/AIDS for the youth in my city (Artemovsk, Donetsk Oblast) and if you had any ideas for me as all I've only ever been a bossy stage manager they would be greatly appreciated! I hope that everything is going well in Ames and for those of you not in Ames I wish you break a leg as well! You can email me if you'd like or if you have any ideas at beewagoner@gmail.com.

Well, we made it! We filled up our new little car with things we thought we couldn't live without, i didn't think with allll the stuff between Scott and I we could move with just a car load but we did it! It took us about 16 hrs to make it but we did! So, we are all moved into our apt. and trying to figure the city out. Its a bit different than IA! :) Our first day here we had to go to the prison...to get background check for our apt., never been to a prison before, soooo that was interesting. Scott has started working on campus and hopefully I can get some small jobs down here before I come back in October!! Have a great start of the school year guys! See ya soon!

Oh, theatre friends...it's been too long! I'm not sure I qualify for this blogspot because I didn't exactly graduate from here, but I love this department and I love theatre and I'm so excited that everyone has been so active. So, here goes...

I graduated in May from UI and I am currently assistant directing/stage managing "Jekyll and Hyde" for Ankeny Community Theatre and working a crappy job to save money. In December, I am relocating to New Orleans, Louisiana. A professor of mine at Iowa and I are starting a theatre company down there, focused on social change and politics. If you find that you will be in the area, and are interested in helping/acting/managing/anything, please don't hesitate to email me (rachaelrhoades@gmail.com) and I'll try and get you involved. For more information on the kind of theatre that we "do", please look up Darwin Turner Action Theatre.
As far as the here and now, I'm focused on becoming a triple threat, becoming more marketable, and increasing my design portfolio (I design and build props). Much love to all of you, and keep on truckin'!
